I read the book Life 3.0 in 2024 along with my friend Leo. In this book, Max Tegmark, the author and a physics professor at MIT, explores artificial intelligence along with life 1.0, life 2.0 and life 3.0. These three stages of life are what he thinks explain AI and what can become of it.
I think this is an excellent book, because not only does Dr Tegmark cover the topic of AI, but he explains everything before it too. He uses data to support his thinking, and also covers the myths and facts about AI.
I learned many things from this book. But what I found to be most interesting were the many images and diagrams that he used to help the reader understand him. For example, on page 87, not only does he explore different varieties of AI, such as chess-playing AI, he also shows us a map of exactly what this AI’s process is when playing chess.
This book does not only cover the technical aspect of AI, but also raises some ethical questions. The author does not provide an answer to every question. Instead, he gives the reader all the information about AI, letting them decide by themselves what their opinions are about it.
I think reading this book would be a great learning experience for high schoolers wanting to learn about AI in a broader context, and maybe even for those who want to eventually become scientists and AI enthusiasts.
